New Polestar 7 set to join expanding Polestar line-up

You’ll have to bear with us on this one because it might involve a little bit of waffling. It’s not our fault though, if it helps. We’re going to tell you about the latest bit of Swedish excellence that is the Polestar 7. The only issue at the moment is that beyond the name, we know absolutely nothing about it.

The Swedish carmaker has recently announced that the Polestar 7 will follow in the footsteps (or tyre tracks) of the Polestar 1, 2, 3, 4, forthcoming 5, and much anticipated 6. And that’s pretty much the entire story so far. Before we start the guessing game we should probably clarify one thing though. If you’re currently drooling over that stunning two-seater roadster in the pictures…that’s not it. The Polestar 7 will actually be a premium compact SUV, and it will be built at some undetermined point in the future.

Just to try and put the timeline into something approaching a meaningful context…

The Polestar 5 is due to be launched in the second half of this year. That one is a luxurious 4-seat Grand Tourer, and as it’s based on Polestar’s own bonded-aluminium platform and the first Polestar to use the latest 800-Volt technology, it’s likely to offer performance to match the luxury.

The sportscar you were just drooling over is actually the O2 roadster. It’s a concept that Polestar has promised to put into production, and when it does it will become the Polestar 6, but not until some point in 2026. Although plans aren’t exactly “finalised” so that may not actually be the case.

Which means the Polestar 7 that has just been announced isn’t likely to appear for at least another couple of years unless there’s a major change to the timetable.

When it does arrive, the Polestar 7 will be entering the fastest-growing and most profitable premium segment. In this case, it’s the premium segment currently occupied by the likes of the Porsche Macan so the competition is likely to be stiff. We obviously don’t have any technical details for the Polestar 7, but new design boss Philipp Römers has said it will be “everything our customers expect from us, both in terms of design and performance”. Given Polestar is already known for its progressive design and attention to detail, it should be more than capable of taking on that challenge, whenever it may come.

In fact, the only elephant currently occupying the room is Polestar itself.

Until last year, Polestar was the luxury EV arm of equally Swedish carmaker, Volvo. Then Volvo announced it would no longer be funding the brand. Parent company, Geely, has expressed its continued support for Polestar, and according to Geely CEO, Daniel Donghui Li, it is currently looking to “secure additional equity and debt funding” and that Polestar remains “an important global asset for Geely.”.

That doesn’t mean the brand is in trouble as such, it just needs to rethink its approach.

The plan is to approximately double Polestar’s number of retail outlets

This will be achieved alongside the rollout of the ‘Polestar Energy’ home charging initiative. Deliveries of the existing Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 will be ‘ramped-up’, and as we’ve already said, the Polestar 5 performance GT will join the line-up later this year.

Reducing costs has also been tackled with the announcement that Polestar will gradually transition from a multi-platform approach, the idea being that building all of its cars on the same platform should reduce complexity and costs moving forwards. That part of the plan is due to take effect from the Polestar 7 onwards.

So, to summarise, the Polestar 7 will be a cool, stylish, and beautifully designed premium compact SUV that should be available to order at some point in the next couple of years.

While you’re waiting you may as well have another drool over the (potentially) Polestar 6. And for those of you interested in what’s underneath that stunning roadster body, apparently it will sit on the same bespoke platform as the upcoming Polestar 5. That means 800-volt electric architecture, two electric motors, 872bhp, 0-62mph in 3.2s, and a top speed in excess of 155mph. Oh, and a price tag that could end up somewhere in the region of £200k.

Alternatively, you can always be a little more realistic and choose something else from the Polestar model lineup that is available to lease while you wait.
