In a class of its own: the all-new, fully electric Volvo ES90

When a manufacturer launches a new model, it usually gets placed into an easily identifiable segment. It’s a hatchback, an SUV, or a Saloon - you get the idea. Except when it isn’t, or course. And while this may not happen very often, when it does, we're left trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. Not that there’s anything square or round about the brand-new Volvo ES90, although it may well be sitting in a class of its own.

Some might say it is a saloon. Others will see a fastback, or even hints of an SUV. Volvo has decided to let others judge, but we can say that Volvo intends the new all-electric ES90 to eliminate the compromises between those three segments.

The new Volvo ES90 combines the refined elegance of a saloon, the adaptability of a fastback, and the spacious interior and higher ground clearance associated with SUVs. If you’re looking for a versatile and practical car that doesn’t compromise on space or comfort, this could be the ideal lease choice for you.

The ES90 is Volvo’s sixth all-electric model to enter the line-up, joining the EX90, EM90, EX40, EC40 and EX30 on the journey towards the brand’s full electrification.

Looking at the ES90, you can easily see the benefit of the saloon/fastback/SUV crossover idea. You’ve got the SUV’s raised ride height for a better view of the road, the elegant lines and interior space of the premium saloon, and the fastback’s flowing roofline complements those elegant looks and interior space with excellent aerodynamics that help to boost overall efficiency and battery range.

The front features Volvo’s familiar ‘Thor’s Hammer’ headlight design, and the rear is equally distinctive, with new C-shaped LED rear lamps complemented by LED lamps in the rear window. You can also specify your ES90 with a choice of seven exterior colours and four alloy wheel options varying from 20 to 22 inches in size.

Thanks to its long wheelbase of 3.1 metres, the ES90 also provides extremely generous legroom for second-row passengers as well as lots of luggage space. The large and wide tailgate hatch makes it easy to load and unload the spacious boot, and folding down the three individual rear seats expands the room available for those extra big loads. There’s also the empty space left by the lack of engine at the front, which is perfect for storing the charging cables and regularly needed knick-knacks.

As befits Volvo’s premium status, the interior focus is on comfort, quality materials, and stylish Swedish design. Six interior ambient light themes create a comforting sensory environment, and a variety of upholstery options further allow you to personalise the ES90. The ES90 also comes with a panoramic roof that adds to the light and airy ambience of the cabin. The glass roof provides UV protection of up to 99.9 per cent, and if you pick the electrochromic version, you can even adjust the transparency of the glass so you can ‘turn down’ the sun to reduce glare at the touch of a button.

The 14.5-inch touchscreen display gives you access to navigation, entertainment, climate, your phone and more. Volvo has fitted the new ES90 with the latest 5G-capable infotainment system with Google built-in, so you'll have Google Maps, Google Assistant and access to the Google app store from day one.

The infotainment system also incorporates a 9-inch driver display and the head-up display to provide the driver with all the important information, and to help you navigate tight parking spaces, a new 3D view supported by a 360-degree camera is there when you need it. And being a Volvo, you probably don’t need reminding that the new ES90’s safety systems are state of the art too.

800 volt architecture adds 180 miles in 10 minutes

‘State of the art’ doesn’t just apply to the Volvo ES90’s safety features either. The ES90 also represents the latest in terms of Volvo’s electric systems and battery technology.

A new 800-volt technology makes its debut in the ES90, unlocking faster charging, more performance, and more efficiency. The result is a car that goes farther and charges faster than any electric Volvo before. You can add around 180 miles of range in just 10 minutes at a 350kW fast charging station, and with a driving range in the region of 430 miles you’ll need to stop and recharge yourself long before the battery starts asking for more electrons.

The new Volvo ES90 is available with three powertrain options: a Single Motor Extended Range, Twin Motor, and Twin Motor Performance.

The Single Motor Extended Range provides uninterrupted power to the rear wheels while the Twin Motor and Twin Motor Performance powertrains distribute power between the front and rear motors for added traction and a more dynamic drive. All three of the powertrain options feature ‘one pedal’ driving to improve efficiency and smoothness, and there’s also a dedicated Range Assistant that keeps an eye on your battery usage and suggests ways to improve range. The rear-wheel drive Single Motor Extended Range is the most energy-efficient choice. Its 92-kWh battery boasts a range of more than 400 miles, and that’s despite it generating enough power (approx. 330bhp) to hit 62mph in 6.9 seconds.

The Twin Motor powertrain adds a second motor and a larger 106kWh battery for better performance, longer range and all-wheel drive. The extra battery capacity boosts the range to around 435 miles, and the extra motor also contributes with an increase in power to almost 450bhp and a sprint time of 5.5 seconds to 62mph. On long motorway cruises the rear motor can also disconnect to help optimise range.

The range-topping Twin Motor Performance option takes things up another notch with an extra power boost to go with the energy-saving features of the Twin Motor setup. It features the same 106kWh battery as the regular Twin Motor powertrain, along with the 435-mile range. The difference lies in the enhanced acceleration that comes from boosting the power to a whopping 680bhp, and the fact that you'll leave most other cars standing at the lights when you can hit 62mph in just 4 seconds.

With orderbooks open now, the Volvo ES90 is the latest addition to an already impressive line-up of premium all-electric models.

It combines advanced technologies with Scandinavian design and superior comfort, creating a truly premium car that fully deserves its place alongside the EX90 SUV as one of Volvo’s flagship models.
