R Black Edition tops Volkswagen T-Roc range

New Launches

If you’re about to lease yourself one of those compact crossover SUVs that are so popular, you might want to hang on a few minutes until you’ve read this. Don’t worry, you already know the car so there isn’t a load of new information to digest just when you thought you’d decided. And even if you have decided, we have to mention the new range-topping Volkswagen T-Roc R Black Edition…just in case.

There’s every chance a VW T-Roc was on your shortlist anyway, so the latest Black Edition that now heads the lineup with a stylish new look and quite a bit of substance is just another example of why it’s such a good choice.

The T-Roc was VW’s first compact SUV when it was introduced to the range in October 2017. Its bold design and coupe-like roofline has proved to be very popular, especially when it comes with generously specified trim-levels, a spacious interior, and Volkswagen’s reliability and build quality.

Give or take a few millimetres here and there, it’s basically the same size as the Golf but the additional height offers a greater sense of space and a higher driving position. And being of similar size to a hatchback with a similarly short wheelbase, the T-Roc handles like one too.

The performance-focused T-Roc R that joined the line-up in late 2019 also gave the range its very own hot version, and it provides the perfect platform for this new flagship version to build on.

VW’s latest R Black Edition is based on the existing high-performance T-Roc R, with the addition of a darkly stylish design pack and even more equipment worthy of its place at the top of the T-Roc line-up.

Black trimming - as you might expect

The design pack enhances the styling with black decorative trims and roof rails, black mirror housings and eye-catching black and diamond-turned 19-inch Estoril alloy wheels. It’s a slightly sinister look that the T-Roc pulls off exceptionally well.

The interior of the new R Black Edition also features a few extras over the standard T-Roc R.

The upgraded specification adds a rear-view camera, heated front seats, electronic tailgate, and a large tilting and sliding panoramic sunroof. It also boasts a Beats sound system with six speakers, digital eight-channel amplifier, subwoofer and 300W total output as standard.

The only thing that hasn’t been upgraded – because it’s really not necessary – is the performance.

Under the bonnet you’ll find the same 2.0 TSI engine that fully justifies the R in R Black Edition. Its turbocharged 295bhp is enough to sprint to 62mph in under 5 seconds (4.9 to be exact) and on to a limited top speed of 155mph. A seven-speed direct-shift gearbox makes the driving effortlessly smooth, and VW’s 4MOTION all-wheel drive ensures there’s plenty of grip to go with all power.

Order books for the new Volkswagen T-Roc R Black Edition are already open, so if you have just changed your mind at least you don’t have to wait to order yourself one.
