Volkswagen tackles the electric revolution head on with the new ID.3

 Published 6th June 2019
New Launches

It was only a matter of time before everyone got in on the electric car act, and now arguably the largest manufacturer in the world has joined in big time, it's probably safe to say the electric revolution is well and truly under way.

The car in question is the brand new Volkswagen ID.3.

It's a compact hatchback that will sit alongside the Polo/Golf range - only without the petrol/diesel element, and is the first in a long line of planned electric cars.

Such is Volkswagen's commitment to the ID Project they've even gone to the trouble of converting an entire factory into the largest production site for electric vehicles in Europe. A factory that will soon be producing up to 330,000 cars per year, and not an internal combustion engine in sight.

The name ID. stands for intelligent design, identity and visionary technologies, and following the launch of the ID.3 additional models will roll out, such as those previewed by the concept cars ID. CROZZ, ID. VIZZION and ID. ROOMZZ.

In other words, at some point the ID range will also include a saloon, a compact SUV, and a full-size SUV to go along with the compact ID.3. You get the IDea....(Sorry!)

So will the new ID.3 be worth considering?

First off, it won't be available in that snazzy pink shape disguising pink outfit the car is currently wearing in the pictures.

In fact we are actually months away from the official launch of the new car at the 2019 Frankfurt International Motor Show in September. Production won't actually begin until late this year with first customer deliveries due mid-2020.

But already, plenty of people think this new ID.3 is an absolute hit.

VW opened for pre-orders and the results have been quite staggering. In the first week of pre-booking they have already taken 15,000 orders for the ID.3 1ST special edition launch models. Bear in mind that the production run for the special edition is limited to 30,000 vehicles so half of them have already sold. In the first week. For a £1000 deposit!

So what do we know?

In terms of power the VW ID.3 will be offered with three battery options; a 45kWh giving a range of around 200 miles, ideal for local trips and commutes; a larger 58kWh battery with a range of up to 260 miles which is the battery option fitted as standard in the 1St models; and a 77kWh battery with a range of up to 341 miles.

The ID.3 1ST comes with large wheel rims and comprehensive equipment, including voice control and navigation system, IQ.Light and bi-colour exterior and interior design. It's likely most of these options will feature across the range, even if they won't necessarily be standard on all models.

Price wise the ID.3 should start at under £30k but prices won't be confirmed until later in the year. In line with the rest of the VW range there will be attractive offers available once the ID.3 is officially launched.
