New Skoda Superb continues to offer understated brilliance

New Launches

Very few cars manage to be utterly brilliant without shouting about it. They offer space, comfort, stylish design, efficiency, value for money, a wide variety of features, and yet they still manage to pass people by unnoticed. Come November there's going to be a new option for the discerning lease driver that offers all of the above. If you're looking for a car that's everything its name suggests, look no further than the brand-new Skoda Superb.

Ninety years after the launch of the historic first model, Skoda is set to unveil its fourth-generation Superb later this year.

While the original Superb was launched in 1934, the story really begins in 2001 when Skoda revived the name for its new flagship model more than 50 years after the original went out of production. Since then, the Skoda Superb has been packed full of innovative technology, won numerous awards for its luxurious feel, and quietly gone about the business of being an excellent car. To date, more than 1.5 million have been delivered to customers, and when the fourth-generation goes on sale in November that understated success is only going to continue.

The upcoming Superb has everything it needs to be just as successful as its predecessors.

It will be available in two body versions which will both offer more interior space and headroom. As you can see from the pictures, it has been out testing in camo prior to its November release.

The new Skoda Superb is longer and taller than its predecessor in both hatchback and estate versions, offering more headroom and even more generous boot space. Skoda has also upgraded the design by introducing a more sculptural feel to both models alongside a slender new lighting design with a 3D effect.

The interior of the new Superb has been redesigned with an innovative combination of manual controls and touchscreen-based digital operation intended to make it very occupant-focused.

The new infotainment display measures up to 12.9 inches, making it the largest display to appear in a Superb.

The gearshift lever has also been mounted directly on the steering column, putting it within easy reach and leaving the redesigned centre console with a very clean and uncluttered look.

Some features are completely new to Skoda such as the electrically controlled roller blind acting as a luggage compartment cover in the estate version, a centre armrest for the rear seats with integrated tablet holder, and a double storage pocket on the back of each front seat to hold documents or magazines as well as a smartphone. The designers even went as far as creating an integrated funnel in the windscreen washer reservoir cap to make it easier to top up the washer fluid.

Under the bonnet, the latest Skoda Superb combines excellent fuel economy with great performance.

Three highly efficient petrol engines, two state-of-the-art diesels, and a new plug-in hybrid offer a range of power outputs from 150bhp to 265bhp. For the first time, Skoda is also offering a mild-hybrid version and all models will be fitted with an automatic DSG transmission as standard. All petrol and diesel variants come with a seven-speed gearbox while the plug-in gets a six-speed. Petrol and diesel versions will also be available in a 4x4 option.

The plug-in hybrid will only be available as an estate and will combine a 1.5-litre petrol engine with the electric motor to produce around 200bhp. The battery has also been improved and can now give you around 60 miles of emissions-free driving before the engine kicks in. In addition, Skoda has increased the maximum charging rate at wall boxes and AC charging points from 3.6kW to 11kW, so you can charge the battery over three times faster. The plug-in hybrid version also allows DC charging up to 50 kW for rapid charging while you're out and about.

More details on the new Skoda Superb will be available closer to the launch in November.
