New MINI John Cooper Works revealed

Tom and Jerry; Kermit and Miss Piggy; Laurel and Hardy: some partnerships just work so perfectly that the two parties become inextricably linked. That’s exactly what happened in 1961 when racing car designer John Cooper finally persuaded the bosses of the British Motor Corporation to let him create what would become the legendary Mini Cooper. More than six decades later that famous partnership is still with us in the shape of the brand-new MINI John Cooper Works.
Featuring new styling touches inside and out, a new centrally mounted exhaust system, new wheel options, and that powerful engine combined with go-kart handling, BMW has recently unveiled the latest MINI Cooper JCW range.
With motorsport inspired interior design - including variant exclusive John Cooper Works experience mode - red and black weave dashboard, and stainless-steel pedals, the new MINI John Cooper Works and MINI John Cooper Works Convertible celebrate the brand’s heritage and success on the racetrack.
The exterior look of the MINI Cooper has remained roughly consistent in the new models but with a few extra details to further elevate the already high standards of the John Cooper Works badge.
A new centrally mounted single-exit exhaust system is offered for the first time, alongside a sculpted black rear diffuser, red JCW branded brake callipers, and LED headlights with daytime horizontal JCW specific running lights fitted as standard.
The MINI John Cooper Works comes as standard with 17 inch JCW Sprint Spoke alloy wheels in black, Chili Red exterior paint and an aerodynamically shaped rear spoiler. The one with the roof also offers an additional six optional body colours as well as larger 18-inch alloy wheels in a two-tone finish. The convertible version is also finished in Chili Red exterior paint with the 17 inch JCW Sprint Spoke alloy wheels, alongside seven further body colour options including an exclusive Cooper Grey finish. Both models also offer the option of mirror caps finished in jet black or chilli red.
The racing heritage is also reflected on the inside with the John Cooper Works seats upholstered in black synthetic leather with red stitching weave providing proper support for dynamic driving. A knitted surface on the dashboard and seats offer a chequered flag pattern, nodding back to the motorsport roots of John Cooper Works, alongside stainless-steel pedals and a sport steering wheel with branded six-o’clock fabric spoke.
The dashboard is dominated by the 24cm OLED central display that provides relevant information at all times and can be easily operated by both driver and passenger. The display features the same MINI Experience Modes - Vivid, Core, Green, Timeless, Balance and Personal – that allow you to customise the interior ambience of the cars, while a new model-specific JCW mode can also be accessed to display performance related data including power, torque, engine temperature and a G-Force metre.
Cooper Works delivers more spec
Both new MINI JCW models also offer an increase in standard specification. A Head-Up display, wireless charging, high beam assist, and heated front seats now come as standard along with an upgraded Harmon Kardon sound system.
Both variants also feature the latest safety systems to support the driver. Twelve ultrasonic sensors and four surround view cameras can identify real-world traffic conditions such as automatic speed and distance control. The same sensors also allow for automatic parking manoeuvres with the Parking Assistant Plus system, while steering assist and lane keeping assist also come as standard.
So, we’ve got the looks. We’ve got the heritage. All that’s missing from the equation is that legendary performance and handling combination. In true John Cooper Works fashion that box is also well and truly ticked.
A 2.0-litre, four-cylinder TwinPower Turbo engine powers both of the new MINI John Cooper Works models and having 231bhp and 380Nm of torque to play with, the performance is exactly what you would expect.
The MINI John Cooper Works offers a 0-62mph time of 6.1 seconds and a top speed of 155mph, while the convertible variant hits 0-62mph in 6.4 seconds and has a top speed of 152mph – marginally slower but a small price to pay for those wind-in-your-hair moments. With dynamic acceleration in mind, the new models also receive a dual-clutch automatic transmission and enhanced suspension to maximise handling and agility.
Both of the new John Cooper Works models will be produced at the spiritual home of MINI in Oxford. More importantly, both are already in production and available to order right now with first deliveries due to commence in early 2025.
The only decision you have to make is whether you’d like to lease your new MINI John Cooper Works with or without the roof…
