Your 10-point guide to the new Ford Transit Custom
Customisable, connected and tough as anything. That’s how Ford describes the new Transit Custom, the latest version of Britain’s best-selling commercial vehicle.
Here are the 10 things you need to know about the business workhorse that powers the UK - and whether it’s suitable for your operational requirements.
Load and payload
The new Ford Transit Custom offers loadspace from 4.3-6.8 cubic metres and a maximum gross payload of 1,327kg. It is available in low roof, high roof, short wheelbase and long wheelbase variants. There is so much to choose from, the price list stretches to 87 pages!
A solution for every business
The Ford Transit Custom comes in a variety of formats in addition to a standard panel van.
Double cab – Owners can choose from two or three seats up front but can also specify a second row for up to three additional passengers, with a fixed bulkhead to separate them from the loadspace.
Multicab – The Ford Transit Custom can be ordered with a clever configuration that combines a second row of two seats shared with a full-length loadspace, separated by a full-height bulkhead.
Kombi – A passenger carrying variant combines great cargo capacity with up to nine seats.
Access all areas
Improved proportions make the new Transit Custom more usable, with a lower step-in height for easier entry to the cabin and a sub-2.0m overall height, so restrictions aren’t a barrier, such as underground car parks.
Every powertrain on offer
The new Ford Transit Custom comes with diesel, petrol-electric hybrid or pure electric powertrains.
- The 2.0-litre diesel offers manual or automatic options, with power ranging from 110-170PS, including a new all-wheel drive variant.
- The hybrid option combines a 2.5-litre petrol engine with an 11.8kWh battery for up to 35 miles of emission-free driving.
- The all-electric Ford Transit Custom can cover up to 209 miles on a single charge, while offering 1,088kg of carrying capacity.
A model for every business
Operators can choose from six different specification levels – Leader, Trend, Limited, Trail, Sport and MS-RT.
Leader: The entry-level model features all you need in a van, with hinged rear cargo doors, up to eight tie-down loops, LED headlamps, Quick Clear windscreen, 13-inch touchscreen, digital instrument cluster, and full bulkhead.
Trend: Key additional features include air conditioning, locking glove box, 16-inch wheels, and a rear parking camera.
Limited: Premium additions to the Trend model include optional tilting steering wheel, LED load space lighting, optional power sliding doors, a load-through bulkhead, heated seats, keyless entry and start, power folding door mirrors and LED headlights.
Trail: This introduces a rugged and capable look to the range, with standard all-wheel drive on auto models, limited slip differential, and unique decals.
Sport: In addition to racing stripes and decals, the Sport features 17-inch alloy wheels and rear spoiler, LED tail lights and dual zone climate control.
MS-RT: A front bumper with integrated splitter, unique front grille, side sills and wheel arches show the MS-RT means business. There is also a rear diffuser, painted brake callipers and sports seats, with a unique steering wheel.
Bespoke conversions for every sector
Ford offers specialist conversions designed for the unique needs of every sector, including tippers, dropsides, cranes and welfare units. Conversions can also cater for food delivery, while there are temperature-controlled variants for pharmaceutical businesses and animal transport. Dedicated conversions for taxis include wheelchair accessible models. Ford also offers specialist conversions for ambulance, police, fire and the military. In addition to Ford Transit Centres, customers can also use the expertise of the Ford Pro Convertor Programme, recognising the best convertors across Europe.
An office on the road
An innovative steering wheel tilt feature lets drivers create an angled desk when parked for catching up on paperwork, while Ford SYNC 4 provides enhanced 5G connectivity.
Making deliveries easier
Delivery drivers can make up to 150 stops per day. Delivery Assist helps streamline the process by automating some tasks via the 13-inch touchscreen. When enabled, Delivery Assist activates when the driver shifts into Park. The vehicle will automatically switch on its hazard lights, close any open windows, and lock the door once the driver leaves the van. When the driver returns, they can use keyless entry, then the hazard lights will switch off and the windows will return to their previous position.
Expert fleet management with FordPass Pro
FordPass Pro can be used to manage up to five vehicles. The free app gives managers the tools to view vehicle location and health status, as well as enabling remote locking or unlocking of doors.
Flexible servicing to keep drivers mobile
To minimise downtime, Ford supports fleet customers with Ford Mobile Service, putting technicians on the road to meet fleets where they work. In addition, all Transit Service sites have extended opening hours, including Saturdays in some regions, with overnight servicing appointments also available. There is also a collection and delivery service and Ford Express Service, which puts two technicians to work on a vehicle to get it back on the road more quickly.
