BYD expands EV choice with new Sealion 7

BYD is taking the UK car market by storm, with sales soaring this year to more than 6,000 units.

Its climb up the sales charts means it is rapidly closing on Polestar in the race for market share, while has already left established brands in its wake including Alfa Romeo and Jeep.

The new Sealion 7 is designed to accelerate its growth, with a mid-sized SUV to rival the Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5 or Skoda Enyaq.

It is the seventh pure-electric car to be launched in Europe by the brand, offering a combination of comfort, space and performance.

It takes its design influence from the smaller Dolphin and Seal models, all part of an Ocean-themed line-up. The Sealion is 30mm longer than the Seal and 160mm taller.

At the heart of the new Sealion is its electric drive system, with a choice of two battery capacities – 82.5kWh and 91.3kWh.

The rear-wheel-drive Comfort specification and all-wheel-drive Design variants use the smaller battery, which provides an official range of 285-300 miles.

The range-topping Excellence AWD, with a larger battery, can cover 311 miles on a single charge.

Comfort and Design editions can be recharged at up to 150 kW, allowing the battery to be filled from 10% to 80% in 32 minutes. The larger battery in the Excellence model can accept charging speeds of 230 kW, taking it from 10% to 80% in 24 minutes.

All that power can also equal performance, with 0-62mph achieved in just 4.5 seconds, depending on the model. When it comes to practicality, the Sealion 7 offers 520 litres with the folding rear seats in place, while lowering them reveals 1,789 litres of carrying capacity.

Elsewhere in the cabin there are 20 cubbyholes for storage.

Drivers and passengers can access the car’s infotainment system through a 15.6-inch screen that can rotate between portrait and landscape orientation.

Features include greater integration of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay into BYD’s own systems, meaning phone navigation instructions and song information can be displayed on the car’s digital instrument panel and the head-up display.

Other features as standard include front and rear parking sensors, a 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control, traffic-sign recognition, intelligent speed-limit control, forward and rear-collision warning, automatic high beam control and a wealth of driver safety features.

In addition, there are also heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, keyless entry and start, dual-zone climate control, wireless smartphone charging, and Vehicle-to-Load technology, so occupants can power items using the car, ranging from a coffee machine to a small fridge. There is also a standard heat pump.

The new BYD Sealion 7 will begin appearing in showrooms and on the Gateway2Lease website for BYD leasing deals from the end of 2024.
