New BMW 2 Series Active Tourer steps up a gear

General Guides  New Launches

The UK launch of the completely re-engineered BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is underway. That's probably all we need to say. If you're looking to lease a compact family car with loads of space, great specification, and great driving dynamics you need look no further.

Drivers can choose from two petrol engines and one diesel, with the range set to expand from summer 2022 with the addition of two plug-in hybrid models equipped with fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology for a significantly extended electric range.

A choice of Sport, Luxury and M Sport variants, and the usual BMW array of extensive individualisation options, means you can personalise to suit your taste too.

The new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer's all-new architecture is designed to accommodate both electrified drive systems and conventional engines, with the second generation of 48V mild hybrid technology and seven-speed Steptronic dual-clutch transmission fitted as standard in all model variants.

Two petrol engines are available from launch, both assisted by a small electric motor. A new 1.5-litre three-cylinder unit produces 170bhp and offers a 0-60mpg time of around 8 seconds. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit powering the BMW 223i Active Tourer develops 218bhp and sprints to 60mph in 7 seconds. The new BMW 218d Active Tourer is also available with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine that accelerates from 0 to 62mph in 8.8 seconds, while returning 53.3-58.9mpg with emissions of just 125-138g/km.

Plug-in hybrid technology will also join the range

During the summer, the BMW 230e xDrive and 225e xDrive Active Tourer will appear. In both models, the electric motor acts on the rear wheels while a three-cylinder petrol engine drives the front wheels, giving the car all-wheel drive for great traction and stability. Maximum output is 326bhp for the BMW 230e and 245bhp (136hp plus 109hp) for the BMW so these will certainly be the sportier models. Maximum charging capacity is also up from 3.7kW to 7.4kW, meaning that a full charge can be delivered in around 2.5 hours, and electric-only range has also been increased to around 49 miles.

The new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is offered in three specifications, with the entry-level Sport offering 17-inch alloy wheels, Sport seats with anthracite cloth upholstery, LED headlights, high-gloss Shadowline exterior trim, and Parking Assistance with reversing camera and Park Distance Control as standard. Moving up the range adds bigger wheels, leather upholstery, adaptive suspension, heated seats, and the like.

The interior of the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer has also been redesigned, with advanced features normally found on higher models.

The BMW Curved Display – with its frameless glass surface angled towards the driver – brings a modern highlight to the cabin, as well as enhancing the spacious and open feeling of the cabin. The newly designed control panel contains the redesigned gear selector, Start/Stop button, volume control, and buttons to activate the parking brake and other vehicle settings. The new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer also provides increased headroom, shoulder room and elbow room in both rows of seats compared to its predecessor.

In other words, the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is probably going to be a very popular car. It's got contemporary style, a well-equipped interior with some pretty advanced technology, and powerful but efficient drivetrains that should put a smile on your face without denting your wallet too badly.

Sounds like the perfect lease choice for a practical family car really. Work out your BMW 2 Series Active Tourer lease budget here.
