A bold prediction from a well-known movie that hasn't come to fruition, but the creations that navigate the myriad of paths, lanes and carriageways across the land have certainly advanced, in technology, aesthetics, design and fuel. We are now in the time of the electric vehicle, but what can we expect from the next generation? It's time to go back to the future.

Pickup Trucks

Canoo Pickup Truck

If it is good enough for NASA, then it is good enough for you. In fact, the Canoo Pickup Truck is so highly thought of, that Walmart has already agreed to purchase 4500 units for their delivery teams and Zeeba have signed up for 3000. The expected release is 2024/2025, so watch this space.

Tesla Cybertruck

The Tesla Cybertruck isn't new information for anyone who hasn't been living under a rock as we all saw the video of it (allegedly) outpacing a Porsche, whilst towing a Porsche. What we do know for certain is the Cybertruck can tow 5000kg, which is equivalent to two African elephants, for up to 340 miles from a single charge and is expected on British shores one day… maybe.

Cadillac Celestiq

We are not exactly sure if the Cadillac Celestiq should be in this category or the luxury one. Probably in both, but maybe in neither. We sound confused, and to be honest we are a little. It looks like a coupe that has been stretched out at the back, a kind of opposite to the 1960s Jaguar E-type, but it has a boot that opens to create a backspace similar to a pickup truck. We are not sure this is very practical, but you can come to your own conclusions at some point in 2024 if you have over a quarter of a million pounds to spare.

Ferrari Electric Supercar

When a new car comes out of Maranello, the world stands still, knowing their jaw will soon drop and their eyes will be treated to a sensational feast of carbon fibre, chrome and burning rubber all wrapped up in a blur of red as the supercar roars past. The Ferrari EV Supercar is expected in 2025, and all Ferraris are intended to be electric by 2030. With such a lengthy experience in F1, when it comes to automotive and electrics, Ferrari has the advantage.

Ariel P40

When you catch sight of the Ariel P40, don’t be surprised if you find yourself scouring the sky for an illuminated bat shape calling the car to action. It certainly looks like an incarnation of the Bat Mobile and the jet engine used to charge the electric motors that power it, just adds fuel to the fire. However, this is a road car no bigger than a VW Golf, but will we ever actually see it on our roads… only time will tell.

Nissan Hyper Force

If you like angles and a front end that looks like a large chinned Decepticon, then this EV could transform your life. It feels like the work of Philip K Dick had fallen into the hands of fan fiction writers and they were compelled to draw an illustration of the vehicles in their futuristic landscape. This Nissan Hyper Force is more than just fantasy, as a prototype has already debuted at the Japan Mobility Show and the model is intended for release in 2028.

BMW IVision Dee

Move over dogs, there is a new best friend in town. The Dee stands for Digital Emotional Experience and the BMW IVision is intended to be a vehicle that can interact with you emotionally and, apparently, take you on a journey between physical and virtual reality. Whether a car that continually craves for you to open up to it is what the people want remains to be seen, but with an expected release date of 2025, we will soon find out.

Citroen Oli

When you were a child playing with your Lego and building a car, more often than not, it would come out looking like the Citroen Oli. It doesn’t just stand out for its blockish design, but also for its price tag and efficiency. Crafting some panels from corrugated cardboard has lowered the overall weight of the car to a tiny 1000kg, which makes the vehicle more efficient and more economical. Since road legal models have already been produced, with full release intended for 2024, perhaps the Citroen Oli should be in a category of its own… practical cars.

Hyundai N Vision 74

Who would like an Aston Martin DB5 with driver assist technology, a VW Camper Van with Sat Nav or a Ford Model T with somewhere to connect your smartphone? Surely, everyone. Well, Hyundai understands the fusing of classical design with modern technology is sure to get the juices flowing and that is why they are releasing the Hyundai N Vision 74. Fuelled by a hydrogen fuel cell and battery and based on the 1974 Hyundai Pony concept, the N Vision 74 is full of the latest tech features but retains the style and individuality of cars of the past and is expected to go into limited production in 2026.

Lancia Pu+Ra

Lancia is not trying to reinvent the wheel… oh actually, they have. Well, the steering wheel at least. The shape appears inspired by a toddler demonstrating their strength by stretching out a hula hoop, but apparently, this is radical geometry. Perhaps Lancia may prefer you to liken it to the controls of a jet plane, but they are three-edged. Do we need an indeterminate-shaped steering wheel? Probably as much as a car needs a coffee table, but this is what concept cars are for and if there was one way to describe the Lancia Pu+Ra, then, due to its interior focused on comfort, it would be a coffee shop on wheels.

Peugeot Inception

Whilst Lancia has tried to reinvent the steering wheel, Peugeot has got rid of it entirely… kind of. They have replaced it with the Hypersquare and Halo Cluster that will be debuted on the Peugeot Inception. It is fundamentally a screen with four recesses for gripping and, unsurprisingly, square-shaped. To make the car turn, you need to place your hands on the ‘Hypersquare’ (not a steering wheel) and use them to pivot the geometric-shaped unit slightly clockwise or anticlockwise to turn left or right. A bit like a steering wheel.

Nissan Hyper Punk

The second Nissan on our list also has ‘Hyper’ in its name, but be fair to Nissan, it is the name of their range and not just a cheap trick to make things sound faster. Like a ‘Hyper Snail’. The Nissan Hyper Punk does look the business; if your business is gang warfare in the year 2300 and your enemies are known for going to town on your vehicles with sledgehammers. However, it does incorporate various geometric styles on lights and features that give it a certain charm and the interior looks like a fun arcade game.

Apple Titan Car

Rumours and whispers about the autonomous, high-tech, EV offering from the tech giant, and world dominator Apple have been surfacing for almost ten years and still, there are no cars on the road with a once-bitten piece of fruit adorning their bonnet. The secretive project known as Titan continues and the world waits with bated breath with only a few computer-generated images of what it might possibly look like to quench their thirst. Will it ever come? We will have to wait and see.

DeLorean Alpha 5

There has only ever been one DeLorean ever released to the public. It was a rather special car because if you got it to 88mph (not on British roads as that would be illegal), it could take you anywhere in time. Sadly, the fictional DeLorean was much better than the reality and the company failed in 1982. However, in 1995, a huge fan of the previous model, and perhaps a certain movie, bought the rights and branding to the company and nearly 30 years later, the DeLorean Alpha5 EV is expected to be on the market in 2024. In case you are wondering, it does 0-88mph in 4.35 seconds.
