Chinese brand Omoda to launch in UK

Company Fleet  Electric Vehicles  New Launches

It’s rare that an unheard of manufacturer announces its entry into the UK, but that’s what’s happening with the launch of Omoda into this market. The brand, which is part of Chinese automotive giant Chery Automotive, will arrive in the UK next spring with its 5 SUV.

Similar in size to the likes of Hyundai’s Kona and the Ford Puma, the 5 will launch with a choice of two powertrains - petrol or electric. Both will arrive from the off, but the EV version has yet to have any details confirmed. If it’s anything like the Chinese version, expect a 61 kWh battery, good for a range of around 280 miles. The petrol model will come with a 1.6 turbo engine, producing around 200 hp, and 290 Nm of torque.

Equipment levels are subject to changing between now and launch, but the entry-level Comfort model will come with the likes of a powered tailgate, wireless phone charging, and Apple/Android compatibility. The Noble specification will boost that to 18-inch alloys, 360-degree cameras, heated leather steering wheel, and electric sunroof.

Inside, drivers get one large swathe of glass covering both digital instruments and touchscreen system, plus a cabin that seems to cherry pick design elements from the likes of Hyundai and Tesla. Pricing is expected to start at less than £25,000 for the petrol version, though plans are not announced for the EV.

The Omoda 5 is the first planned model to arrive from the brand, though this is likely to be followed by the Omoda 9 in late 2024 - a large SUV comparable with the Hyundai Santa Fe in size - plus the 3 crossover (think Nissan Juke for scale) and 7 SUV (roughly Kia Sportage proportions). Existing platforms are built for a variety of powertrains, with conventional internal combustion technology joined by hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and pure-electric options depending on the model.

Omoda is also keen to build up brand awareness with the likes of the  “O-Club”, a social community where owners - or “Omoders” as the company likes to call them - can share images and posts online.

The Omoda 5 will be available to order for leasing later this year, for leasing later this year, with deliveries starting in February 2024.
