If you're in the process of deciding which premium SUV to lease please accept our apologies. We're about to make your life a little bit more complicated by throwing the brand-new Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe into the mix.

This is the fifth generation of Jeep's flagship model and the first to come with a plug-in hybrid option. And that might be enough to sway your decision away from the usual suspects.

The new model boasts all-new architecture, all-new exterior design, and all-new interior to go with the new plug-in hybrid powertrain. The new Grand Cherokee retains Jeep's rugged capability and brings it into the electric age.

The 4xe plug-in hybrid itself is already in use on other Jeep models so it's tested technology. It combines two electric motors, a 400-volt battery pack, a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Overall, it produces 380bhp so power certainly isn't lacking. It also improves efficiency and can deliver up to 32 miles on electricity alone, while a sizeable 637Nm of torque allows you to tow up to 2.3 tonnes too.

The new sculpted exterior also delivers a modern and updated premium appearance to the most technologically advanced Grand Cherokee Jeep has produced to date.

A lowered, tapered roof improves the aerodynamics without sacrificing cargo space, and the slightly lower beltline means bigger windows with the extra glass allowing additional light into the cabin and improving the view from the elevated driving position. It's got an updated version of Jeep's iconic seven-slot grille that's bigger and wider and a new front fascia that hides the long-range radar and other new bits of technology. A Gloss Black roof comes as standard on Trailhawk and Summit Reserve, combined with seven new colours: Diamond Black, Bright White, Velvet Red, Midnight Sky, Baltic Grey, Silver Zenith, and Rocky Mountain.

The Cherokee's new interior has also evolved

It now features new materials and modern amenities to match the bold new exterior.

The front panel features new slim vents, 10.1-inch digital screens as well as an optional segment-first 10.25-inch front passenger interactive display. The 16-way adjustable front seats offer great comfort with higher-spec models adding driver and passenger massage function. Heated/vented seats are also available in the first two rows, with three-level configurable controls.

The New Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is available in four trim levels: Limited, Trailhawk, Overland and Summit Reserve.

The entry-level Limited model sits on 20 inch wheels, features full LED exterior lighting and an optional dual panel sunroof. It comes standard with full speed Forward Collision Warning, Traffic Sign Recognition, Drowsy Driver, and Selec-Terrain system for added traction when going off road. The interior features premium vinyl perforated seats with front and rear ventilation and a 10.25 inch digital TFT cluster, plus the 10.1 inch Uconnect infotainment screen.

Overland models are placed to offer the best of both worlds with premium comfort and traditional Jeep capability. There are 20 inch polished wheels, dual exhaust and body colour front and rear facia create a purposeful exterior. On the inside, you get the standard panoramic sunroof, multi-colour ambient interior lights and premium Nappa leather seats for an added touch of luxury.

As the name suggests, Trailhawk is all about Jeep's legendary off-road capabilities. It features 18 inch wheels with All Terrain tyres which are connected to the Quadra-drive II system and a limited slip rear differential for off-road control. The interior is comfortable and functional with vinyl and suede seats with blue stitching, ventilated in the front.

Sitting on top of the Grand Cherokee range is the Summit Reserve trim. With 21 inch polished wheels and an interior that offers unmatched luxury with its Palermo leather seats and door trim, real walnut wood accents, 19 speakers, and the 10 inch interactive passenger display screen. To give you an indication as to how well equipped the range-topping trim actually is, take a look at the options list. You can choose from a different metallic paint and a rear-seat video package. That's it. Everything else Jeep could possibly offer you already comes as standard.

And now you can see why we apologised earlier. If you're about to lease a premium SUV and you thought you'd made your mind up it's entirely possible that you've just changed it. Don't worry though. The brand-new Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe will have that effect on a lot of people.
