New BMW 5 Series launched - with all electric version
The eighth-generation 5 Series has been revealed by BMW, and the ever-popular executive saloon will get an all-electric version for the first time.
The BMW i5 is available with a choice of two powertrains initially - the eDrive 40 or M60 xDrive - with a third option confirmed as due next year, though with no details about it.
The i5 will have a range of either 361 miles in eDrive 40 specification, or 320 miles in M60 xDrive form, with the latter capable of getting from 0-62mph in just 3.8 seconds thanks to putting out more than 600hp.
Electric models are joined by a petrol-powered 520i, which will return up to 49.6mpg from the 208hp four-cylinder mild-hybrid. An eight-speed automatic transmission is fitted as standard.
BMW claims that regardless of the powertrain, the 5 Series will be the most dynamic version yet, with a stiffer chassis, and adaptive suspension available - or M Sport suspension fitted as standard on i5 models.
The interior is inspired by BMW's latest flagship, the i7/7 Series, and features a wide screen stretching to cover both the driver's digital instruments and infotainment system. Systems include Amazon Alexa integration, BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, Digital Key Plus to enable a phone or Apple Watch to open and operate the vehicle, and over-the-air upgrades.
As well as a third electric powertrain and additional engine options, there will be an i5/5 Series Touring estate option arriving in 2024 (currently being kept under covers - see the picture). The i5/5 Series launches in October 2023, and will start at just under £50,000 for the 520i, or a little over £73,000 for the entry-level i5. We'll have new BMW 5 Series leasing rates soon.
In the meantime, why not check out our other BMW models.
