100 years of experience honed in the all-new MG HS SUV range

Low Emission Vehicles  New Launches

Every year, the Goodwood Festival of Speed uses its iconic central feature to celebrate a particular milestone in the history of an equally iconic brand. This year, it was the turn of MG to take centre-stage on the immaculate lawn of Goodwood House as part of its centenary celebration. A celebration that also happened to coincide with the launch of the brand’s latest SUV, the all-new MG HS.

Already one of the most popular cars in the UK over the last few years, the next generation MG HS range now boasts sharper styling, more space, new specification, and a choice of efficient petrol and Plug-In Hybrid drivetrains.

The Plug-In option is likely to be the more popular of the two considering the difference it can make to your pocket. It pairs the 1.5-litre petrol engine with a hybrid system consisting of a powerful electric motor, a 24.7kWh battery, and a 67kW generator. The result is an electric-only range of around 75 miles, lower emissions, and considerable fuel savings. It will also accelerate the new MG HS to 62mph in 6.8 seconds so it’s no slouch either.

And let’s not forget the MG HS is already unbelievably good value compared to pretty much every other SUV on the market, making it a highly-desirable lease option. Prices start as low as £25k for the entry-level petrol model, rising to just £34k for the range-topping Trophy version of the PHEV, which means you can get an awful lot of car for a lot less than you might think.

For a start, it looks like it should be more expensive. The new MG HS has a much more refined and sophisticated appearance compared to the last generation. It features a longer wheelbase that allows for shorter overhangs and sleeker lines whilst also creating more interior space. The new front grille and slimmer headlights add to the sense of width and presence too.

Smart interior cabin space

The interior is equally stylish and contemporary, making the most of the enhanced cabin space.

There’s a premium feel all around the cabin, with comfortable and supportive seats, clutter-free surfaces, an increased number of storage options, and a larger boot space. A new three-spoke steering wheel and a modern, shuttle-style gear shifter also bring an additional sense of luxury.

The central display is also bang-up-to-date in the new MG HS, with two 12.3-inch screens set across the dashboard, one for the driver display and one for the infotainment system.

Three-mode virtual display

The virtual driver display offers three distinct modes – Map, Digital, and ADAS - focusing on either rolling navigation, a simple display of just the important stuff, or a real-time visualisation of the vehicle and its surroundings, powered by the driver assistance systems.

The second screen in the centre accesses the infotainment system with its live navigation services, weather and traffic updates, access to Amazon Music, and smartphone connectivity as standard. If you opt for the Trophy specification you’ll also benefit from a new 360° surround view camera and wireless smartphone charging too.

In fact, the entire specification of the new MG HS range has been updated with a number of upgrades over the outgoing model, including the enhanced MG Pilot package containing the latest safety systems as standard on all new models. You can also specify your new HS in one of five premium paint finishes, and Trophy versions also offer a tan option to replace the black leather-style upholstery for a brighter contrast in the cabin.

The range is also refreshingly simple with only two trim-levels, SE and Trophy

The entry-level SE – a ridiculous description for something so well-equipped, even if it is technically accurate - comes with a long list of standard equipment. LED headlights, parking sensors and rear camera, air conditioning, keyless entry, automatic wipers, and cruise control all feature alongside the dual-screen infotainment system.

Upgrading to the Trophy specification adds 19-inch diamond cut alloy wheels, front fog lights, electrically adjustable driver’s seat, power tailgate, an upgraded speaker system, and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality on PHEV models as standard. Plus, the surround view camera and wireless phone charging we mentioned previously. We did say the new MG HS range offered an awful lot for your money.

If you’re interested in leasing yourself a brand-new MG HS, the order books are already open so there’s nothing stopping you. First deliveries of the petrol version should have already begun by the time you read this. Plug-In versions aren’t expected until the end of September, but that’s still not too long to wait if you prefer to opt for the hybrid.
