New BMW 5 Series needs no introduction.

New Launches

Some cars are important because they break new ground and change the way we think about the automobile.

Some cars are important simply because they are old or rare or tell an interesting story. This one is important because it has consistently moved the goalposts in order to maintain its place at the top of the tree. There's a very good reason why the BMW 5 Series is the world's most successful executive business saloon.

Now in its 8th generation, the newly unveiled BMW 5 Series is more dynamic than ever, featuring a wealth of digital innovations and all-electric drive for the very first time.

The exterior design of the latest generation reinterprets the sporty elegance of a BMW 5 Series Saloon and its proportions make the character of the dynamic business saloon instantly recognisable. Road presence is affirmed by its athletic proportions and larger exterior measurements compared to its predecessor.

The new 5 Series has grown in length, width, and height, while the increased wheelbase has further improved space and comfort, especially in the rear. There is also, for the very first time, an all-electric i5 version.

The front end sees a new interpretation of the signature kidney grille and twin headlight setup. It features new LED adaptive headlight clusters, a hint of the old forward-pointing ‘Sharknose” look of the grille, and top models also feature an ‘Iconic Glow' lighting strip around the grille that emphasises that unique BMW appearance. The rear shoulder and roof lines flow into the contours of the new LED taillights that, similar to the front light clusters, also function as daytime running lights. The range-topping i5 M60 xDrive and the M Sport Pro models also feature a few extra design touches unique to each trim level.

New digital display

The fully digital BMW Curved Display represents the heart of the interior redesign. Its frameless glass surface is slightly inclined towards the driver and consists of a 12.3-inch Information Display behind the steering wheel and a Control Display with 14.9-inch screen, merged into a single high-resolution digital display.

Many of the car's functions are controlled via the touchscreen which can also display videos via YouTube. If the mood takes you, there's also an AirConsole feature that allows the screen to double as a games console. It boasts a range of racing, sports, quiz, simulation, strategy, jump-and-run and puzzle games that use your wirelessly linked smartphone as a controller.

The control panel on the centre console has also been redesigned. The iDrive Controller, gear selector switch, start/stop button, My Modes buttons, volume control and other buttons are clearly arranged on the centre panel. A wireless charging tray is also included as standard on all models. There are also newly designed seats and a new steering wheel that can be specified with a heating function, and for the first time in a 5 Series there's even a panoramic roof on the options list.

Standard engine options feature a four-cylinder petrol engine with 48-volt mild hybrid technology. The engine is the latest from BMW and uses lots of clever technology to make it as efficient as possible. In the new entry-level BMW 520i it generates a healthy 208bhp and, coupled to a new eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission as standard, takes 7.5 seconds to accelerate from zero to 62mph.

Plug-in hybrid extends vehicle options

The BMW 5 Series Saloon range has expanded further with the introduction of the BMW 530e and BMW 550e xDrive plug-in hybrid models, which offer an electric range of up to 63 miles and 55 miles respectively. The 530e option offers a fraction under 300bhp while the 550e generates a whopping 489bhp. And they aren't even the top models either. That accolade is currently reserved for the i5 M60 version with its massive 601bhp powertrain and sub-4 second sprint time.

Also set to join the line-up in spring 2024 is the next generation of the BMW 5 Series Touring which, like the saloon, will be available with all-electric drive for the first time, as well as with plug-in hybrid drive and pure combustion engine drive.

Available in three trim levels in the UK – M Sport, M Sport Pro, and the exclusive BMW i5 M60 xDrive – the new BMW 5 Series Saloon is available to order now. If you're a business person looking to lease a suitably business-like car, you'll probably want to call us to order your brand-new BMW 5 Series sooner rather than later.
